Winter fruit tree pruning

Fruit trees such as apples and pears should be pruned during the winter. Learn about topics including: understanding fruit trees, winter pruning, spotting pests and disease and quiz the expert. Suitable for complete beginners and those with some experience. Dan has a specialist interest in fruit trees and is currently working with a publisher on a book about the latest research and techniques for fruit tree care.

Fruit trees of the Prunus genus (cherries, apricots plums etc) should be pruned in spring or summer.  Learn how to keep trees healthy and fruitful in this masterclass or workshop. Soft fruit pruning

Climate resilient planting

With hotter summers, longer periods of drought and wetter winters, climate change brings many challenges for gardeners. How can we adapt and choose plants which will cope with our changing climate? Put aside your feelings of existential dread about climate change for a couple of hours with Dan's informative and science-based talk, and learn how to choose plants that are both beautiful and resilient.

An Introduction to Square Foot Gardening

You may have heard the term, but what exactly is 'Square Foot Gardening'? Find out how you can save time, effort, tools, space and water and create a productive harvest in almost any size of garden! Dan is a Certified Square Foot Gardening Instructor and has adapted this iconic American system of growing in small spaces to cope with our British climate.

One-to-one mentoring support: Dan's unique background in the horticultural, commercial and community sectors means he can give a unique insight and practical advice on a wide range of subject areas. Dan has advised and supported dozens of community groups. Dan can deliver one-to-one mentoring support on a range of problem areas, such as trouble-shooting, setting up your community group, project management or conflict resolution.

About Dan:

Plants and gardening have been Dan’s passion and calling for over 28 years, with his first paid gardening work for family and neighbours at the age of 15. Dan has worked as a tree surgeon, soft landscaper, hard landscaper with design, a general gardener in all types of domestic gardens and in commercial settings, estate gardener, head gardener, plant specialist, horticultural manager, garden centre duty manager, regional horticultural trouble-shooter, garden & DIY centre manager, retail plant buyer, trade only plant seller, nurseryman, online plant sales administrator, neuro-diverse and dementia gardening instructor, gardening class instructor, association chairman and chief horticultural expert.

Dan has worked as an arborist, ranger and forester looking after thousands of trees in the streets, parks and woodlands of East Sussex.

Gardens Dan has worked at include Bolney Manor and Estate, Sheffield Park, Walstead Place and Deans Place Hotel. Commercially, his experience includes Wyevale Garden Centres, Stone Cross Nurseries and Millbrook Garden Centre. 

Dan is qualified in Horticulture, Arboriculture and Forestry, and is currently part of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Masters of Horticulture programme. Dan is a certified instructor for the Square Foot Gardening Foundation. 

Through his non-profit organisation, GIA (Gardening In Action) CIC, Dan has helped and supported numerous voluntary groups and community gardens, primarily in East Sussex. Dan has set up and runs a community garden in Seaford (in partnership with Roots Rising CIC), is a trustee of a local nature space, is a partner for Seaford and Falmer station gardens and runs an inclusive horticultural ‘into work’ programme.

Dan is a fact-checker and reviewer for numerous online and print publications, including Horticulture Magazine.
