If you’ve been waiting for a train at Seaford Station lately, you might have spotted something new! The raised beds on the platform have been given a new lease of life, thanks to volunteers from Gardening In Action. The planters have had a fresh coat of paint and have been transformed with colourful, pollinator-friendly flowers and low-maintenance plants – making the station brighter for passengers and more welcoming for bees and butterflies too.
Gardening In Action volunteers have filled the beds with a special peat-free, water-retentive compost mix, which reduces the need for watering by up to 90%. It’s also more stable than ordinary compost, which means it doesn’t need to be replaced as often. A range of drought-tolerant plants has been carefully chosen to provide a long-lasting, colourful, and pollinator-friendly display.
Our huge thanks to Seaford Town Council Community Grants and the Southeast Community Rail Partnership for funding the project, and to Brewers of Seaford for their donation of paint.
Last year, over 600,000 people visited Seaford Station! If you’re a local business and would like to sponsor one of the planters, we’d love to hear from you. Funds raised will go towards maintaining the beds.
Would you like to join our friendly volunteer group and help care for the new raised beds at Seaford Station? We’ll be meeting up once a month or so for some gardening. Tools and equipment are provided, and there’s no need for gardening experience or physical strength.
